The Necklace and Other Stories-Guy De Maupassant Review

Guy De Maupassant and his pet caterpillar.
Book #42
I actually finished this before the previously reviewed The Fellowship of the Ring, but I forgot, so I am writing it now! I really enjoyed the collection of stories by Maupassant earlier this year, The Odd Number, and thus I was rather excited to pick up another volume of such, this time form the usually reliable fellows at Dover.
By my reckoning, the book has 3 A's with "The Necklace", "A Piece of String", and "The Horla". 3 B's with "Ball-of-Fat", "Mademoiselle Fifi", and "My Uncle Jules". 2 C's with "Mme. Tellier's Establishment", and "Miss Harriet". Finally, there is one D with "A Way to Wealth".
These stories were more simple than the others I read, lacking a lot of the more fantastic elements (aside from the Horla) that the previous volume did. I also did not enjoy the prose as much, which doubtless arises from this being translated by different people. The prose in The Odd Number leapt off the page and drew me in whereas this just seemed rather workmanlike. There is not a whole lot to say about it, the stories are fine overall, but they just lack that extra spark and wit needed to propel them to exceptionality (with the exception of the 3 A's, which are quite good).
Overall: 6/10
